From Our Team to Your Classroom: 2024 in Review with Gratitude

As we reflect on 2024, the Visual Studio Code for Education team is filled with gratitude for the incredible community of educators who have supported and inspired us throughout the year. Your thoughtful feedback in our online community, insights shared by the members of our Education Advisory Board, and enthusiasm in our workshops - both in person and online - have been invaluable in shaping the future of VS Code for Education.

Together, we launched VS Code for Education, added key product features like Immersive Reader and project sandboxes, shared activities through events like CS Education Week and Hour of Code, and worked to empower computer science students around the world.

As we look ahead to 2025, we’re excited to bring you even more features and resources to support your classrooms. Thank you for being an integral part of this journey with us!

In case you missed it, here are a few of our key moments we’ve shared together in 2024:

Bringing Code to Classrooms

This year marked an incredible milestone with the launch of VS Code for Education! Our free, online, computer science education platform provides integrated curriculum and a sandbox coding environment for everyone. In 2024, we welcomed students and educators from 172 countries around the globe!

New Activities Students Loved in 2024

In 2024, we introduced a variety of coding activities and courses to support teachers in bringing computer science to life for their students. Among the most popular were Memory Matrix, an interactive game that reinforces computational thinking, and Intro to Python, a beginner-friendly course to help students explore the fundamentals of programming.

Seamless Learning: Coding Made Accessible for All

We’re making coding more accessible and inclusive for all students. We added tools like Immersive Reader to support diverse learning needs, theme support (including high contrast options), and enhanced screen reader compatibility to VS Code for Education. Combined with the popularity of coding challenges these updates support educators looking to create inclusive, engaging, and dynamic learning experiences for all students.

Collaborating and Showcasing: Publishing and Sharing

Students took their creativity to the next level with the ability to publish and share their projects seamlessly. This empowered students to showcase their work and build digital portfolios. They also shared and remixed their code projects, fostering collaboration and inspiring new ideas among their peers. These tools continue to support teachers like you in promoting creativity, collaboration, and real-world skills in your classroom.
